On Friday we were lucky enough to have a beautiful day for Green-Gold Enviro School Celebration!
We had a Powhiri in the morning, along with some fantastic speeches from some of our senior students. Later on in the day we went and watched the hangi being cooked and taken off. We then all got to have a taste of the hangi in a fantastic picnic on the field.

We loved the hangi food!

The Muritai Herald!!!!

Last term our writing topic was persuasive writing. We did lots of debating and discussing our ideas before writing a few pieces of persuasive writing.

We also designed an advertisement using persuasive language. After doing all this work Lily thought it would be a great idea to put some of our writing and adverts into a newspaper! We all agreed and so the MURITAI HERALD was born!!

It was a lot of work to put together a newspaper but we are very proud of what we have achieved! Here are some pictures of our finished newspaper. We have a copy in our class if you would like to see it up close!

Man walking on the Moon!!

Today was a special day - it is the 40th aniversary of the day Neil Armstrong walked on the moon. We watched a video clip today and discussed what it was all about. Tomorrow we are reading a newspaper article and using WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, WHY and HOW to summarise the important information.

Take a look for yourself...

Relating to Others

Our Key Competency focus for Term 3 is Relating to Others.

Today Room 10 looked at the Ministry definition of relating to others. We decided there were lot of words we did not understand so we spent some time looking up and discussing what each part meant.

We then wrote our own definition in language everyone can understand.

We then had to think about what this would
look like, sound like and feel like in our school environment. We came up with lots of fantastic ideas! We are going to write Warm Fuzzies for people we see doing all these things in our classroom and in the playground.

If you see anyone from our class doing any of these fantastic things feel free to ask someone from Room 10 to write a warm fuzzie for that person or come on in and pop one up!

Voice Threads

Last term we planned and produced some voicethreads reporting on some of the activities we do in our classroom.

We worked in groups to plan and prepare what we were going to say and then used the laptops to record our voices!

We discussed what made a good voicethread and wrote a list of criteria for our own ones. Some of the things we included were - speak in a clear voice, plan and practice what you are going to say, speak slowly

Here are some of our voicethreads!

Matariki

Today at Kapahaka we were making kites in the traditional Maori way to celebrate this special time of year. This time of year is called Matariki. It is a celebration because this is the only time of year that seven special stars can be seen. We made kites using toetoe and flax (harake). Maori Tikanga says that we must give away our first piece of work. You can come and see some of our kites in the Library, Office or in other places around the school.

Kapahaka!!

Fantastic worm website!

As part of our homework this week, we have been asked to look for facts about WORMS! Here are some questions to help you find information!
Where do they live?
Why are they important?
What do they do?
How do they grow?
How big do they get?
How do they eat?

Find as much information as you can. You can write notes in your homework book to share with the class!

Have fun finding out about worms!

There is a really cool link to some information under our Inquiry links in the side bar!

Next week....Slugs! are they the same as snails??

Have a look at this amazing banana slug! (Thanks Room 11 for finding these fantastic videos!)

Today we watched how a snail eats!

We have been learning all about snails in class and their possible effect on our garden. We have learned that there are many kinds of snails and that not all of them are pests! We have learned that a snail is mostly a scavenger and eats dead animals and plants...although they can sometimes have a treat of fresh vegetables! This week we are writing up everything we have learned about snails in a report. We will publish these on our blog so that you can see all the fantastic information we have!

ANZAC Poems!

We used some pictures as our inspiration. We discussed what the people in these pictures would see, hear and feel.

We brainstormed lots of ideas, trying to think about words that really described what war would be like. We used these ideas to write some poetry.

Mrs Drinkwater has published these onto our writing blog. Feel free to go and have a look and leave a comment...if you want! They are also published up on the wall at school.

Art and Fitness

Hi All

This week in Room 10 has been very busy!

For art this week we have done some sketching. We used 6B pencils to create patterns using all sorts of different lines. We got really dark fingers from so much smudging!
We then used a dye wash to add a little bit of colour. Hopefully Mrs Drinkwater will have these up on our wall next week, so please come in and have a look!

For fitness, we are doing relays. Lots of different kinds of relays. We have used tennis balls to throw and catch and have also done lots of running, skipping and hopping relays.
