Today at Kapahaka we were making kites in the traditional Maori way to celebrate this special time of year. This time of year is called Matariki. It is a celebration because this is the only time of year that seven special stars can be seen. We made kites using toetoe and flax (harake). Maori Tikanga says that we must give away our first piece of work. You can come and see some of our kites in the Library, Office or in other places around the school.
